HGV Training in Exeter
Exeter sits at the point where the M5 meets the A30, putting drivers here within reach of routes that run east into Somerset, south towards Plymouth and west into Cornwall. For anyone working in Devon’s logistics sector — or looking to break into it — that geography matters. The county depends on road freight in a way that coastal and rural areas always do, and the demand for qualified drivers reflects that.
Drivers based in Exeter can access HGV training through our network.

What the licence means for you
Cat C covers rigid vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Cat C+E extends that to articulated combinations — the full artic licence that most haulage operators and distribution companies require for trunk routes and long-haul work. Both licences are held for life and recognised across the UK, which means what you qualify for here works anywhere you want to drive — whether that is staying in Devon or taking roles further afield.
Many of the people we speak to in Exeter are experienced van drivers or warehouse operatives who know the road freight world but have not yet made the step up to a Cat C or Cat C+E licence. Others are making a broader career change and want to understand the full picture before they commit. Wherever you are starting from, the first conversation is about understanding your situation — not signing you up.
How the training process works
Before any practical training begins, you will need to hold a provisional licence for the category you are applying for. If that is not yet in place, we will tell you exactly what to do and how long it takes. The sequence from there is theory test, medical, practical training and your driving test. Timelines depend on the course structure you choose, your existing experience and test slot availability in your area — we will give you a realistic picture upfront, not an estimate that shifts later.
We organise the theory, the practical training, the Driver CPC and the medical. You do not have to source each element separately or deal with multiple providers.
The courses available
We offer Cat C, Cat C+E, Cat C1 and Cat C1+E. For drivers who want to extend their employability, we also offer ADR for hazardous goods and HIAB for loader crane operation — both are increasingly sought by operators running mixed fleets. Driver CPC initial qualification is included in full licence courses for those who need it.
Exeter’s logistics base
Marsh Barton and Sowton are two of the largest industrial and employment sites in Devon, with active depots, distribution operations and trade logistics across both estates. Drivers completing training in Exeter are well placed to move into roles locally, and the M5 corridor opens access to Somerset and Bristol for those willing to range further.
We provide CV support and job referral assistance as standard, so if you want help presenting yourself to operators after qualifying, that support is part of the package.
