HGV Training in Taunton
Taunton sits at the centre of Somerset’s road network, where the M5 runs north to Bristol and south towards Exeter and the Devon coast. It is a county town that quietly does a lot of logistical work — supplying supermarkets, agricultural merchants, builders’ yards and the region’s care and public sector organisations. Drivers who are licensed to move freight through that network are in consistent demand.
Drivers based in Taunton can access HGV training through our network.
What the licence gives you
Cat C covers rigid vehicles over 3.5 tonnes — the type used across retail distribution, construction supply and public sector haulage. Cat C+E is the articulated lorry licence, which extends your options to trunk routes, third-party logistics and longer-distance freight work. Both qualifications are recognised across the UK and held for life.
Somerset’s job market for HGV drivers stretches well beyond the county boundary. The M5 puts Bristol within forty minutes, and qualified drivers in Taunton are positioned to work across the full South West corridor — from the Bristol distribution hubs in the north to Devon and Cornwall freight operations in the south.
How the training works
Training starts with a provisional licence for the category you are applying for. If that is not yet in place, we will tell you exactly what to do and how to get it sorted. The sequence from there is theory test, medical, practical training and your driving test — we coordinate all of it, including the Driver CPC for those taking their first licence.
Timelines depend on the course you choose, your existing driving experience and test slot availability in your area. We will give you a clear picture of what to expect from the first call.
What we offer
We offer Cat C, Cat C+E, Cat C1 and Cat C1+E. For drivers who want to make themselves more employable from day one, we also offer ADR for hazardous goods carriage and HIAB for loader crane operation — increasingly requested by operators running specialist and mixed fleets. Pass Protection provides an additional test attempt and extra preparation time for those who want that reassurance built in.
After you qualify
We include CV support and job referral assistance in the training package. Somerset and the wider South West have a range of operators — agricultural hauliers, regional distribution companies, construction suppliers — and we can help you present your new licence in a way that gets you in front of the right employers.
