How Do You Prepare For The HGV Theory Test?

Tests are rarely a fun thing to do, for anyone. When it comes to any driving theory test, it can be a bit nerve-wracking. But if you’re training to upgrade your license so that you can drive a HGV professionally, you will need to take a new driving theory test that is specific to HGV driving technique and safety. Just like your original test, this test is split into 2 parts, multiple choice and hazard perception, but these are aimed at the HGV industry. And you can practice for your theory test any time, any place. Like right here, right now, by reading this blog!

Practice Online Beforehand

Online practice tests are an absolute godsend for both new drivers and HGV drivers. These anonymous tests are randomised from a library of previous and possible future theory test questions, designed to give you a good feel for the theory test and how it all works. There are plenty of places you can find a theory test online, but we recommend this one. You might not be able to see the actual questions you will take, but it will give you a good feel for what the test will be like and identify any gaps in your knowledge before the real thing.

Make Sure You Understand The Format

If it’s been a while since you took your standard license, or you just aren’t sure what to expect, you will want to brush up on the basics. After all, there’s nothing worse than walking into a room when you don’t know what to expect. So, here’s how the process will go:

  • The HGV theory test is split into 2 sections – multiple choice and hazard perception
  • There are 100 questions in the multiple choice section
  • You need a minimum score of 67 to pass the multiple choice
  • The hazard perception section is made up of 19 videos, with 20 potential hazards in them
  • There are also 100 multiple choice questions in hazard perception, and you need 67 to pass this section too
  • You can split the sections up onto different days if you want, but most people take them in one go

Focus On Hazard Perception

Hazard perception is one of the most important parts of your HGV theory test, and it’s the element you’ll be putting into practice most frequently when you’re on the road. Again, one of the things you can do here is to make sure you do some practise tests online to familiarise yourself with the format of the test. Above that, you need to learn what the most common mistakes are during the hazard perception portion of the test, and how to avoid making those mistakes yourself. We have a whole article dedicated to this here, so we recommend you go ahead and read that as well.

If You Need Help, Ask!

Remember, you aren’t alone in this. Thousands of people have taken this test before and passed, and you can too. But if you’re feeling worried or a little shaky on your knowledge, you can always ask for help.
