A Guide to Passing Your Lorry Test

A Guide to Passing Your Lorry Test

When registering with The LGV Training Company, you will be assigned a dedicated Training Advisor who will help you with the process from start to finish. They will be there if you need to ask questions or even just for a chat! The licence categories can be a bit confusing, so if you aren’t sure, just ask your Training Advisor, they will be happy to help and offer their professional advice.

If you are not sure what licence category it is that you need to be completing your Advisor will talk you through the best course for you tailoring their advice to encompass what you will be using the licence for. All of our Training Advisors are professionals and have a wealth of knowledge so rest assured they will know which course it is that you will need.

Once you are registered, your training advisor will send you all the relevant paperwork and forms you need for your course and will guide you through how to fill them out. To get registered please contact one of our friendly Training Advisors on 0800 0744007 to discuss your requirements today.

First things first, you will need to do a medical. This is a legal requirement and is put in place to ensure all drivers are in good health whilst out on the road. You can schedule in your driver medical with your GP or any other another medical company. You will need to take with you a D4 medical form for the doctor to fill out (don’t worry, you will be sent the correct forms upon registration). Whilst at your medical appointment your Doctor will check the following:

  • Blood Pressure
  • Eyesight
  • Height
  • Weight

If you have an existing medical condition for example diabetes or epilepsy, please notify your doctor. If you are unsure if your eyesight will meet the required standard it is advisable that you visit an optician before attending your medical just to be on the safe side.

Once the medical has been completed, you will need to complete a provisional form. If your driving licence photograph and address details are up to date, you do not need to send another picture and therefore do not need to pay a fee for the update of the licence. When you receive your provisional applications forms through from your Training Advisor they will have already ticked the correct provisional entitlement box for you,

Most candidates only need to complete sections 1,2,3,4 and 7, however, do check with your Training Advisor before filling them in. Once this form is completed, you will need to send the provisional application form & medical application form away to the DVLA along with both parts of your current driving licence (the card licence and the counterpart licence).

It is recommended that you also send off for your digital tachograph card at this stage. You will need this tachograph card to go into work but this is not required for your training course. You don’t need to send your driving licence off with this application; however you will need to put your licence number on the application, so take note of this before sending your licence away

Whilst your licence is with the DVLA being updated we recommend you use this time to practice your theory test knowledge. When signing up with The LGV Training Company, you will be supplied with a unique username and password to log into the online revision page. Once you have logged in you enter onto the home page. The home page is where you can see your revision progress and how much more revision you have to complete. If you are having problems logging in, your Training Advisor will be happy to point you in the right direction! Just give them a call on 0800 074007 and they will be on hand to assist you.

Your theory test will consist of a Multiple Choice and a Hazard Perception test. Revision for both tests is included with the online revision pack we supply. There are 4 easy steps to follow for revising for your theory test:

  • Step 1 – Learn, this is where you will find all the different topics you may find when doing your theory test where you can read up and learn specific information.
  • Step 2 – Practice, this is where you can test your knowledge on all specific topics you have learnt in the previous step.
  • Step 3 – Mock Tests, just like the real thing! You will get a pass or fail mark for each test that you take; these will have a combination of all the topics you have learnt over the last 2 steps.
  • Step 4 – Hazard Perception, this is where you can practice for your Hazard Perception test. There are videos where you can click on developing hazards which may appear when you are on the road.

Your theory test will be taken at your local DSA Pearson Centre which is located Nationwide. You will need to take both parts of your updated licence with you, so make sure you keep them safe! The Multiple Choice test will consist of 100 questions, and to pass, you will need to score 85%. The Hazard Perception test will be 19 video clips and to pass you will need to score 67%. Once you are ready to take the test just give our Training Operations team a call and they will book at a time, date and location that is suitable for you.

Once you have passed your theory test it’s time to book the practical training course and test. The LGV Training Company allocate to over 45 training schools nationwide so rest assured we will be arranging your training close to home. We arrange the training to suit you and your existing commitments so when booking your dates just let your advisor know of any dates you are not available. If you have any special requests for your training or have any specific learning requirements please do let us know so that we can accommodate these.
During your training week you will cover all aspects of training including:

  • Daily vehicle checks before entering or moving the vehicle
  • Manoeuvres (normally a reverse)
  • Pulling away from the side of the road
  • Hill starts
  • How to use the gearbox
  • Correct use of mirrors
  • Correct use of signalling

If you feel you need any extra help in any of these areas whilst on training just let your instructor know! Throughout your training your Instructor will help to prepare you as much as possible for your test, helping to calm any pre-test nerves. Your Instructor is a driver himself and has been in your shoes before so if there is anything you aren’t quite sure on or need re-capping, just ask! They want you to pass as much as you do!

On your test day, you will have some training time before your test. On arrival at the test centre, you will register with the examiner who will check over your licence with you and then off you go! Each test takes approximately 2 hours and incorporates time for your registration, practical test and de-briefing time.

It is common place to feel nervous before your test but do your best to try and relax! Some of our students find Rescue Remedy helpful to help take the edge off or often recommend chew chewing gum to help your mind focus. If you need to take the pressure off, you can cover yourself with the Pass Insurance before starting your course, which will act as an insurance policy against your test. To find out more about the Pass Insurance please call us on 0800 0744007 to speak to one of our advisors today.

Once you have passed your test the DSA examiner will send your licence away for you to the DVLA to be updated. If you would like to send the card away yourself you are more than welcome to keep hold of it. Once it has been sent back to you, it will have your new qualification on the back of the card licence.

Once you have received your licence back with your new entitlement, you have all of the tools you need in order to secure a job as a lorry driver. The LGV Training Company offers a complimentary recruitment service to all candidates who have booked their course through us. We offer a tailored job search to help you with looking for vacancies; putting you in contact with companies who are currently recruiting for the kind of licence you have. Upon registration, to the recruitment service, you will be sent out our recruitment pack which will include a list of job agencies in your area, local vacancy search, an up-to-date industry newspaper and tips on interview techniques & CV writing. If that wasn’t enough, we can also create a bespoke CV whereby we can check over your existing CV and guide you in gearing it more towards the driving industry or we can create one from scratch for you! To complement our CV writing service we also offer our Drivers a cover letter writing service so if you aren’t sure of what to write we can help you to write a suitable letter to ensure your application is as strong as possible!
