Clipper Logistics is to extend its relationship with Asda, after striking a new 10-year deal that will see the creation of a port-centric facility in Wynyard near Teesport.
The facility, which will have more than one million ft² of operational space when it opens in August 2012, will feature a three-tier hanging garment mezzanine and hanging conveyors to meet the needs of Asda’s clothing business George.
In 2009 Clipper opened a facility in Darlington, which currently handles more than 55 million units a year for George. Operations are due to transfer from Darlington to Wynyard as part of the deal.
Ian Stansfield, distribution director at Asda, says: “On the strength of this success, and our growing clothing business, we have taken the unprecedented step of signing this 10-year contract for Clipper to provide port-centric solutions at the new centre.”
Clipper will also be looking to work with other retailers at the new facility as part of a shared-user agreement.
Steve Parkin, chairman of Clipper, says: “Our belief that port-centric solutions are integral to the future of the retail logistics industry is represented by our £40m investment in this new super-centre for Teesport.”
