Fowler Welch has become the third UK operator to begin on-road trails of a longer semi-trailer, under the Department for Transport’s ten-year trial.

The new 15.65m, tri-axle curtain-sider made by SDC will run out of Fowler Welch’s Heywood, Lancashire, distribution centre for an initial period of rear-steer training. A further two trailers are being built for Fowler Welch by SDC.

The ambient, chilled and FMCG operator says the longer trailers will accommodate an extra four pallets per load offering benefits to its high-volume customers.

Fowler Welch is the third operator, after Wincanton and Stobart Group, to run longer trailers.

Launched last December, the trial could see up to 180 operators running 900 14.6m and 900 15.65m trailers across the country.
