Kent-based Alan Firmin will move to a new site in March, after outgrowing its Snodland base.
The Palletforce member, which in September 2011 branched out into containers appointing former Les Knight Transport MD Peter Knight to head the operation, will move to the Kemsely Fields Business Park next month.
The majority of the six-acre site will be used as yard space, and the whole area will include a two storey office block, warehouse, covered loading area, trailer servicing bay and parking facilities.
Michael Firmin MD says: “We have spent two years finding the right location, planning the site and building it to our own specification because we wanted to be sure we were creating a depot that works not only now but for the future.”
The firm, which became a Palletforce member in 2006, last year won a five-year deal with building materials manufacturer Knauf.

David McDonald, VP operations at DHL Supply Chain’s consumer unit, says: “To support Jeyes Group’s ambitions, we have invested in a warehouse management system which is taking pride of place at the heart of everything we do for Jeyes. Almost three-quarters (72%) of transport and logistics bosses plan to overhaul how they manage the talent within their companies in response to the skills crisis.
Sector analysis of PricewaterhouseCooper’s (PwC) 15th Annual Global CEO Survey reveals that attracting and keeping hold of talent is a significant concern for most bosses within road transport.
Approaching half (45%) of the 98 transport bosses surveyed label the struggle to attract new workers as a “major threat” to the long term viability of their businesses, while a quarter concede that young workers are the most difficult to hire and keep.
The results mirror last year’s, which found attracting and retaining talent to be the number one concern.
PwC’s global transport and logistics leader Klaus-Dieter Ruske says: “Transportation and logistics companies need to improve their brand as an employer, introduce cutting-edge recruiting practices and offer attractive career and development opportunities to the younger workforce.”
A full transport & logistics analysis will be published by PwC towards the end of March

Palletline has opened a hub in Scotland after strong volume growth in the country.
During the past two years the pallet network has added five new member companies in Scotland including RT McEwan in Arbroath and ARR Craib Transport in Aberdeen, which has helped increase volumes.
The company says opening a fourth hub in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, to complement Birmingham, London and Manchester will bring both operational and environmental benefits.
Kevin Buchanan, MD of Palletline, says: “Recent growth in demand has seen volumes reach a critical mass where it simply makes sense to consolidate freight in Scotland rather than transport across additional miles to our other hubs.”
“The move is expected to be particularly valuable for member companies serving the more distant highlands and islands locations, improving competitiveness, as well as enhancing the Palletline service for all Scottish customers.”
Posted in Latest News | Comments OffThe Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is an essential qualification to have, as legislation which took place in 2009 states that it is a must for many drivers who are using their licence to work – as without it they would be breaking the law. Here at The LGV Training Company, we not only provide thorough LGV and HGV Training services, but also can ensure that you have your CPC qualification before commencing work.
Not every single working driver is required to take the Driver CPC however, as the legislation only applies to drivers that passed their CAR test AFTER January 1997. (Note: The law doesn’t take into account when you gained your LGV or HGV licence, but only your initial car test). If you passed your CAR test BEFORE January 1997 and have a C1 or 7.5 Ton entitlement on your licence, there is no need to take the initial Driver CPC qualification and training but will only need to undertake the Periodic Training which applies to ALL working drivers and is required to take place every 5 years.
So if you did in fact pass your car test after 1997 and intend to work as an LGV or HGV driver, the LGV Training Company can promptly have you in line with the law. The qualification itself comprises of 2 modules (Module 2 and Module 4), the first of which is a case study/theory test and the latter being a 30 minute practical demonstration.
Further information of the qualification and periodic training is available by calling us free on 0800 0744 007, and can be provided in addition to all LGV or HGV Training advice. Once again, if you passed your car test after January 1997 and the CPC qualification is mandatory, get in touch with us today to book the training.

Sources say foreign truckers will be expected to pay the charge in advance over the internet and will be hit with swingeing fines for not doing so. CCTV cameras at ports and on major roads will check to see if they have paid. With around 15,000 foreign lorries on British roads every day, the charge could raise more than £50million a year for the Treasury.

But it will leave Brussels bureaucrats furious and spark another row with the EU.
Foreign-registered HGVs make 1.5 million trips to the UK a year — but do not pay any vehicle duty to use our roads and motorways.
That leaves them with a competitive advantage over British firms.
By contrast, our truckers have to fork out an average of £14 a day at toll booths on the Continent.
Roads minister Mike Penning will announce a Government consultation on the new charge today.
Mr Penning will tell MPs: “A lorry road user charge would ensure that all hauliers who use our roads are contributing to their cost, regardless of where they are from. This will help UK hauliers to get a fairer deal and increase employment and promote growth in the UK.”
To get around EU law, British truckers must also pay the £10 charge. But they will be refunded by being let off other taxes.
The move also fulfils a vow made by the Tories and Lib Dems in the Coalition Agreement.

TNT Express has taken delivery of a quarter of the new tractor-units it is introducing to refresh its fleet and ensure that it meets the newly raised emission stands of the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ).
The company, which revealed a £20m, 600-vehicle, refresh last year, has taken delivery of 22 of the 107 tractor units it has ordered. It has also deployed 100 new Cartwright-built Cheetah Fastback trailers.
TNT has also received the first of 190 5-tonne vehicles and 60 7.5-tonne trucks, as part of a plan to increase the amount of smaller vehicles in its delivery fleet.
Simon Harper, TNT’s director of operations, says: “This equipment will be deployed across the network to equalise annual mileage and to meet the revised London LEZ regulations being introduced on 3 January.”
Since the start of the year, vehicles over 3.5-tonnes entering London have been required to be Euro-4 at minimum in order to avoid fines.
TNT is also starting a trial of double-deck trailers within its network and was among the operators successfully accepted into the Department for Transport’s longer semi-trailer pilot. It will be running 13 of the 15.65 metre variation.

Gazeley UK, the owners of Magna Park, have submitted plans for a biomass power station and HGV depot at the distribution centre which they say will create about 330 jobs.
The biomass station will provide power to the various warehouses at Magna Park by burning waste wood chips and Gazeley says it will save about £3 million a year in energy bills because of the low cost of wood chippings and Government subsidies the scheme will attract.
The news comes in the same week that national haulage firm Stobart was given planning approval for a distribution depot at the former George clothing site which will create another 100 jobs – meaning there could be more than 400 new jobs at the site in total.
Gwyn Stubbings, Gazeley’s planning manager, said the aim of the biomass scheme is to provide cheap energy to the companies which use Magna Park.
He added: “It will provide clean power to the firms at Magna Park and it safeguards the future of many jobs.”
The HGV depot will be attached to the Stobart group’s existing warehouse at Magna Park, which the firm owns in addition to the new one it has planned to build at the former George site.
Mr Stubbings added: “The biomass station and HGV depot applications are not directly related but were submitted together a few days before Christmas.
“Leicestershire County Council and Harborough District Council are currently looking at them to decide which authority will make a decision.

London yesterday hosted the annual British International Freight Association (BIFA) Awards for achievements within the logistics industry and the event, sponsored by SDV, was agreed to be a success by all present. As usual there were highlights and the title of Young Freight Forwarder of the Year, this time presented by Virgin Atlantic Cargo, is always one which is both fiercely contested and keenly anticipated with the 2011 winner being Radius Logistics UK youthful representative, Izabela Trojanowska.
Another category always viewed annually with great interest by industry peers is that of the Project Forwarding category simply for the scope and size of some of the amazing projects undertaken. This year the award went to Asco Freight Management for their herculean efforts of support in the dark days following the BP disaster off the US coast, a victory acknowledged as most worthy this year even by their rivals for the title.
This year’s event was hosted by Christine Hamilton following an entertaining introduction by Sir Peter Bottomley MP and BIFA President who surprised many with the news he had been a lorry driver in the days before Parliament beckoned and a wide selection of companies fought it out for the eight general categories on offer. Uniserve deserve special mention in managing the most nominations, a total of four, and finally walking away with the European logistics award sponsored by the TT Club.
